"I don't believe that an arrangement can be dependent entirely on Egyptian goodwill. Mostly we has already an experience in the last twenty five years, and I am saying a very bad experience. We did not cross the canal, and I am saying that should not have happened to us. But it happened to us, but we could have avoided that. The canal still is a very important obstacle, and its not only obstacles when you sit on the canal itself, but the canal is an obstacle as part of the system even if you sit in a lie which I would say is six or seven miles from the canal."

Background: At a mass rally in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Sunday night (20 January) more than 10,000 demonstrators changed their protests against the Israeli Government's disengagement pact with Egypt. The pact -- designed to disengage Egyptian and Israeli forces -- stipulates the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the banks of the Suez Canal.

Amid pouring rain and violent gusts of wind, the crowd shouted 'Begin -- to power'. Menahem Begin, leader of the Likud opposition party, addressed the crowd from a platform, against the background of a giant poster saying, 'No Munich in the Middle East'. Among other Likud leaders present was General Aharon Sheron who left the army on Sunday to take up politics full time.

Earlier at a press conference, General Sharon said that the disengagement pact signed on January the 18th was unsatisfactory. He said that it relied on Egyptian goodwill,which they could never trust, and that the Israelis should never withdraw from the Suez Canal. The canal was vital, he emphasised, if only as a forward observation line.
