    Background: TEHERAN, IRAN

Large numbers of newly-captured Iraqi prisoners-of-war have been arriving by train in the Iranian capital, Teheran. Iranian security forces had to fend off angry citizens when bound Iraqi troops emerged from a train on Wednesday (24 March). Two days earlier, Teheran Radio had claimed Iranian forces had crushed Iraqi strongholds west of Shush and Dezful in southern Iran, killing some 10,000 Iraqi brigades and two divisions were destroyed in the attack, codenamed Operation Victory. On Wednesday (24 March) Reuters news agency quoted western military experts as saying there had been five days of fierce fighting, ending a month-old deadlock in the Gulf war. The experts said it was too early to assess the results of the fighting, with both sides claiming sweeping victories in the latest battles. Iran said the offensive was the largest since the war began 18 months ago. According to Teheran Radio, their captives included a number of senior Iraqi officers, among them one general, plus colonels and majors.
