Background: A one-week conference on tropical meteorology opened in Nairobi on Tuesday (5 February). Three hundred delegates were in the Kenyan capital for the meeting co-sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and the World Meteorological Organization.
Among the topics to be discussed are methods of weather observation in the tropics and the role of the tropics in the transfer of energy, by means of convection currents, on a global basis. There were also to be sessions dealing with forecasting and prediction techniques in the tropics, cloud physics and applied meteorology.
Kenyan Vice-President Mr. Daniel Arap Moi formally opened the international conference and welcomed the delegates to Kenya.
