Background: California's Governor Ronald Reagan was the featured speaker at the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) graduation at the University of California at Los Angeles on Sunday (7 June). Before his address he was repeatedly heckled by a group of anti-war demonstrators.
The demonstration broke out minutes before Governor Reagan was to give his address. Some members of the audience became angered at the hecklers and fighting broke out. Campus police arrested six people, two of them women.
The ROTC has been a constant target for anti-war demonstrations on American University Campuses. Many ROTC building have been burned down by demonstrators.
The dress parade had been cancelled on an earlier occasion because of student demonstrations against the ROTC, but this time the parade ended without further incident.
