POHAMBA: "I want to start by saying that Mr. Albert Mishake Muyongo was expelled from SWAPO because after a quite long time Muyongo's activities were found not to be in the line with the constitution of our organisation. He has indulged himself in the activities which are causing troubles in the organisation and again the most serious thing is that Mr. Muyongo has been organisation our people, especially those who came from the Caprivian region of our country into seceding this region from the rest of the country. this to us is a treason."

REPORTER: "You mentioned tribal lands. Mr. Muyongo is also amazed at this tribalism in SWAPO."

POHAMBA: "There is no such a thing. There is no tribalism in SWAPO, and Mr. Muyongo himself knows that there is no tribalism in SWAPO. In fact, the tribalism that has been created, or the division that has been created by the South African regime as a result of the creation and the foundation of the founding of SWAPO, the tribalism that has prevailed in our country, is no more there. SWAPO has united all the people of Namibia into one organisation and into believing that they are one nation."

Background: Two weeks ago Mishake Muyongo was ousted as Vice-President of the South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO) and on August 6 Mr. Muyongo announced his Caprivi African National Union was withdrawing from the black nationalist movement after sixteen years. In an interview with Visnews reporter Abbey Maine on Friday (8 August) SWAPO national treasurer, Lucas Pohamba, accused Mr. Muyongo of creating unrest within the organisation. But he refuted the former Vice-President's charges that SWAPO was beset by inter-tribal wrangling.
