Background: GRAHAM HILL, DRIVING A BRM (NO. 11) WON THE GERMAN GRAND PRIX AT NURBURGRING AUGUST 5 TO GIVE BRITAIN HER FIFTH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MOTOR-RACE VICTORY THIS YEAR. HILL, DRIVING FAULTLESSLY UNDER APPALLING WEATHER CONDITIONS, LED FROM THE SECOND LAP OF THE 212-MILE RACE AND ACHIEVED AN AVERAGE SPEED OF OVER 80 MPH.

SECOND IN THE RACE WAS BRITAIN'S JOHN SURTEES IN A LOLA (NO. 14), FOLLOWED BY DAN GURNEY OF AMERICA IN A PORSCHE (NO. 7). THE CIRCUIT WAS MADE TREACHEROUS BY CONTINUOUS RAIN THROUGHOUT THE RACE, BUT THERE WERE NO ACCIDENTS.

HILL'S VICTORY STRENGTHENS HIS POSITION IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE. LEADING BEFORE THE RACE BY ONE POINT OVER JIM CLARK OF BRITAIN - WHO WAS FOURTH IN HIS LOTUS (NO. 5) - HILL NOW LEADS BY SEVEN POINTS, WITH A TOTAL OF 28.

LAST YEAR'S WORLD CHAMPION, AMERICAN PHIL HILL, IN A FERRARI (NO. 1), WAS FORCED OUT OF THE RACE AFTER NINE LAPS WHEN THE REAR AXLE OF HIS FERRARI BROKE DOWN.
