Background: Nearly 20-million acres of land in the mid-west and the south of the United States were under the waters of the Missouri and the Mississippi rivers on Sunday (29 April) as the U.S. Government continued its emergency aid to thousands of flood victims.

In Washington, President Nixon declared five states major flood disaster areas, and up until Sunday, ten people were known to have died in the flooding. So far, there's been no estimate of damage, and nobody's been able to say what livestock has been lost.

The Mississippi began to flood nearly a month ago when unusually heavy rains swelled the melting winter snow that flows into the river and its scores of tributaries. The United States Red Cross has given one rough estimate that as many as 100-thousand victims could be receiving some sort of flood relief to combat their plight.

On Sunday morning, the Mississippi had crept up to a record 43.5 feet (13.3 metres), which put it 18 inches above the previous highest recorded level 188 years ago.

The worst hit town so far is West Alton in Missouri, which has been flooded by both the Mississippi, and the rapidly rising waters of the Missouri.
