Background: Troops from Guinea have recently been withdrawn from the United Nations force in the Congo. The Guinea contingents were brought back to Conakry, the capital, in a United States naval transport ship.
Other units have also been withdrawn form the U.N.Force, among them Egyptian paratroops who were flown back to Cairo in American planes. The Malayan Government however has given a new pledge of support for the United Nations. Its troops will stay in the Congo and it condemns those countries which have withdrawn.
The Guinea troops left for home as new moves and developments were a foot in the Congo. President Kasavubu announced a new government; Col. Mobutu was said to be building up a military striking force with which to attack the pro-Lumumba units centred on Stanlleyville; deposed Premier Lumumba - according to the Katanga Government - escaped from his prison, and President Youlou of the former French Congo Republic arrived in Katanga as a media or in the efforts to bring unity back to the Congo.
