Background: INTRODUCTION: An Arab waiter was killed and two children were injured when a grenade was thrown into a Jerusalem restaurant on Wednesday (8 April).
SYNOPSIS: The grenade was apparently lobbed into the restaurant from a passing car.
It exploded in a garden behind the restaurant, where a wedding party was taking place. the garden was packed with guests at the time and it was fortunate there were not more casualties. The Arab waiter, however, was seriously injured in the explosion. Doctors tried to revive him and rushed him to hospital, but he later died. He had been serving drinks from behind a table when the attack occurred.
The restaurant is located on Mount Zion in the western part of the city, and is usually patronised by orthodox Jews.
As the injured were being taken to hospital, the search for the bombers was under way. Police blamed "Arab terrorists" for the attack, and several Arabs were detained for questioning immediately following the incident.
Later, in the Syrian capital, Damascus, a Palestinian commando group issued a statement saying it had carried out a hand grenade attack on Jewish settlers in Jerusalem. The statement, reported by the Palestinian news agency WAFA, claimed several Israelis were killed or wounded in the attack.
