Background: King Hussein of Jordan has called for a unified Arab strategy to liberate Israeli-occupied territories and win for Palestinians the right to self determination. His call came during an address inaugurating Jordan's new National Consultative Council.
SYNOPSIS: "We humbly and sincerely call on the Arab nation", King Hussein said, "to draw up a comprehensive strategy which will govern our common action, mobilise our enormous resources and bypass our transient differences, in order to be able to face the escalating imminent danger." A common strategy, King Hussein went on, was the only way for Arabs to protect themselves and boost their dignity.
The major part of the King's speech concentrated on the crisis in the Arab world ... a crisis also responsible for the creation of the Consultative Council being inaugurated by King Hussein.
After the National Anthem, the new Consultative Council then began its first working session. It started with the swearing-in of the Council's members...there are 60 of them, 57 men and three women. Under the chairmanship of Ahmed al-Louzi, the National Consultative Council has been formed as a temporary measure to fill the vacuum left by the dissolution of the lower house, the House of Representatives, in November 1974 .....King Hussein stressed it was not meant to be a substitute for the Lower House.
