Background: Belgium's Jacky Ickx drove his Ferrari to an easy victory in the ???est German Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday (July 30) around the ???ortuous Nuerburgring mountain circuit.
He led form start to finish as the two main contenders for the 1972 world championship, Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi and Britain's Jackie Stewart, both dropped pit with mechanical trouble in his wake.
Fittipaldi, leader in the championship table with 43 points, retired then his Lotus developed gearbox trouble on the tenth lap of the winding 22.83 kilometres (14 miles) circuit.
Reigning champion Stewart pulled out of the chase when a wheel ???iropped off his Tyrrell on the final, 14th lap. He wasn't injured in the Incident, which happened at high speed.
A crowd of 240,000 spectators watched Ickx cover the 320 kilometres (200 miles) course in the official time of 42 minutes 14 seconds. Sunny weather and a dry track made for ideal racing conditions, and the flying Belgian set a lap record of seven minutes 13.6 seconds on the 10th lap at an average speed of 189.58 k.p.h. (117.79 m.p.h.)
Another Ferrari came second, driven by Fittipaldi's team-mate Clay Regazzoni of Switzerland, and Sweden's Ronnie Peterson was third in a March-Ford.
