Background: President Todor Zhivkov of Bulgaria arrived at Palam airport, New Delhi on Tuesday (16 November) at the start of a six day state visit to India.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Zhivkov and his daughter Lyudmila Zhivkova were greeted with a 21-gun salute as they stepped down from their TU 154 presidential jet -- and were welcomed by Indian President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi and External Affairs Minister Mr. Y.B. Chavan. During his stay Mr. Zhivkov -- who last visited India seven years ago -- will have talks with Mrs. Gandhi and agreements on economic and technical co-operation will be signed.
Another traditional welcome gesture -- and later President Zhivkov replied to a speech by President Ahmed, saying that Bulgarians attached the highest respect to the important role played by India in international life and to the policy of peace and co-operation and India's friendship with socialist countries. During his stay Mr. Zhivkov will also visit industrial and research establishment sin Bangalore and Bombay.
