Background: A THREE-CORNERED ATHLETICS CONTEST BETWEEN SENEGAL, MALI AND THE IVORY COAST LAST SATURDAY AND SUNDAY IN DAKAR, SENEGAL, PROVIDED ALL THE EXCITEMENT AND COMPETITION ANTICIPATED BY FOLLOWERS OF INTERNATIONAL ATHLETICS. SEVERAL RECORDS WERE BROKEN BEFORE SENEGAL EMERGED AS OVERALL CHAMPIONS WITH A FINAL AGGREGATE OF 105 POINTS.

BY THE END OF THE FIRST DAY, IT SEEMED AS IF THE IVORY COAST WAS GOING TO CAPTURE THE HONOURS, LEADING BY 50 POINTS TO SENEGAL'S 45. BUT SEVERAL SPLENDID INDIVIDUAL SUCCESSES ON THE SECOND DAY CHANGED THE SITUATION.

FIRST DAY: SEVERAL ACHIEVEMENTS MADE THE FIRST AFTERNOON NOTABLE. LAMINE DIOP OF SENEGAL BROKE THE NATION JAVELIN RECORD WITH A THROW OF 65.20 METRES - THE FORMER RECORD OF TEN YEARS' STANDING WAS CAPTURED BY OUSMANE LY OF FRANCE IN 1957. AND GAOUSSOU KONE OF THE IVORY COAST, WHO DURING THE TOKIO OLYMPICS WON THE 100 METERS IN 10.3 SECONDS, CAME TO WITHIN ONE TENTS OF A SECOND OF HIS RECORD.

SECOND DAY: WITH THE MALI TEAM LARGELY OUT OF THE RUNNING, THE CONTEST BECAME A BATTLE BETWEEN SENEGAL AND THE IVORY COAST. SEVERAL FINE PERFORMANCES WERE ACHIEVED, NOTABLY GAOUSSOU KONE OF THE IVORY COAST'S TIME OF 21.2 SECONDS IN THE 200 METRES, AND THE 7.50 METRES LONG JUMP OF THE SENEGALESE LAURENT SARR. THE IVORY COAST CHAMPION ELLOE BROU WAS OVER HALF A METRE BEHIND WITH A JUMP OF 6.93 METRES.
