Background: ABOUT TWENTY BRITISH TRAWLERS WERE WARNED THIS MORNING BY A BRITISH INSPECTION VESSEL TO KEEP OUTSIDE THE NEW FISHING LIMITS ROUND THE DANISH FAROE ISLANDS - EXTENDED TO TWELVE MILES FOR ALL COUNTRIES FROM YESTERDAY (FRIDAY). THOUGH THE DANES SET A TWELVE MILE LIMIT FIVE YEARS AGO, BRITISH TRAWLERS WERE STILL ALLOWED IN.

NOW, ARMED FRIGATES OF THE DANISH NAVY SPECIALLY COMMISSIONED AS FISHERY PROTECTION VESSELS, AND EQUIPPED WITH HELICOPTERS WILL PATROL FAROESE WATERS, IMPOSING FINES ON INTRUDERS.

UNDER THE OLD AGREEMENT, BRITISH TRAWLERS COULD FISH TO WITHIN SIX MILES OF THE COAST LINE. THE NEW RULES RESERVE THIS AREA FOR THE DANES AND FAROESE THEMSELVES WHOSE LIVELIHOOD COMES ALMOST ENTIRELY FROM THE SEA.

THOUGH THE DANISH PATROLS SAY THEY ARE NOT EXPECTING TROUBLE AND BRITISH INSPECTORS ARE CO-OPERATING IN KEEPING TRAWLERS AWAY, REACTION AMONG BRITISH FISHERMEN HAS BEEN STRONG - THEY COULD LOSE HALF THEIR CATCH.
