Background: In Buenos Aires on February 24, the Peronist leader, Angel Robledo, announced his candidature for the presidency in the forthcoming elections. Over 5,000 banner-waving people gathered to hear Mr. Robledo, leader of the Justicialist Party, speaking from a specially-erected podium. In a reference to Isabel Peron, widow of the founder of the Peronist movement, he said that internal party committees would give each leader a particular role to play. He added that he didn't believe in popular fronts or coalition governments since they diluted the personality of each party. President Reynaldo Bignone has not yet announced the date for the elections but has said they would take place before November 6 this year. There is as yet no official announcement on electoral mechanisms; it is not known whether there will be direct or proportional representation, or how long the presidential term will be. The Argentine electorate, over four million of whom will be first-time voters, have traditionally split into identifiable groups of Peronists, radicals, a centre party, and now, a left group. Peronists have won all elections in which they have participated so far and, according to opinion polls, remain dominant.
