Background: GHANA WILL HAVE ON OF THE MOT MODERN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD WHEN A NEW AIR TERMINAL BUILDING PROJECT AND AN AERONAUTICAL TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM ARE COMPLETED. THERE WAS THE NEWS GIVEN TO REPORTERS ON SATURDAY WHEN THE GHANAIAN DIRECTOR OF CIVIL AVIATION, MR. E.R.K. DWEMOH, HELD A PRESS CONFERENCE.

MR. DWEMOH SAID THAT THE NEW TERMINAL BUILDING, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY JUNE, WILL BE ABLE TO HANDLE 300,000 PASSENGERS A YEAR AND HAVE A CAPACITY FOR ONE THOUSAND TRAVELLERS. THE NEW TERMINAL IS TO BE NAMED AFTER THE LATE LIEUTENANT-GENERAL KOTOKA, WHOSE STATUE WILL BE ERECTED IN FRONT OF IT.

AT PRESENT FOURTEEN AIRLINERS HAVE LANDING RIGHTS AT ACCRA AIRPORT, BUT THIS NUMBER IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE.

THE NEW PASSENGER BUILDING IS DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT PASSENGERS WILL NOT NEED BUSES TO TRAVEL TO AND FROM THE AIRCRAFT. ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE POINTS WILL BE ONLY A FEW FEET FROM FINGERS STRETCHING OUT FROM THE TERMINAL.

THE PRESENT AIR TERMINAL BUILDING WILL BE TURNED INTO A CARGO SHED WHEN THE NEW TERMINAL STARTS OPERATIONS.

TERMINAL AREA RADAR IS BEING INSTALLED IN THE NEW CONTROL TOWER. IT'S THE FIRST TIME THAT IT HAS BEEN USED IN GHANA.

WORK STARTED ON THE AIRPORT PROJECT IN 1965. THE PROJECT IS BEING UNDERTAKEN BY SODEFRA, A FRENCH FIRM OF CONTRACTORS.
