Background: Damage caused by severe floods inundating wide areas of Austria has risen to a total equalling more than GBP40 million, it is reported by the Austrian Ministry of the Interior.

Between August 14 and 16, thousands of homes were wrecked, hundreds of miles of roads torn up, 40 bridges swept away and 11 people killed by the raging waters.

Worst hit area was the Traun region where communications were completely disrupted. At Lambach, the river toppled over a two-storey building, killing two persons. Furniture and household utensils lay scattered in the streets. Pathetic sight - a sign propped against a chair, with a call for help written on it.

The Mozart city of Salzburg - crammed with tourists attending a music festival - has been hard hit too. Several bridges broke down, streets disappeared under the rushing flood water, the situation being rendered still more critical by 40 hours of incessant rain fall.

Vienna August 13 experienced its heaviest downpour in 20 years. With the Danube steadily rising until August 16, flood water made roads impassable and paralysed a railway yard.

The International Red Cross, as well as Dutch and German national organisations, have offered help to Austria's flood victims. Shipments of blankets and bed-linen are on their way and funds have been placed at the disposal of the Austrian authorities.
