Background: The once thriving Egyptian city of Ismailia on the banks of the Suez Canal has nearly become a ghost town in the wake of Israeli bombing. The city's chief administrator who toured the town on Monday (30 March) with a group of newsmen pointed out the sad state of the once bustling community.

Before the Six-Day War in 1967 Ismailia was a prosperous town with many fine hospitals, public buildings, and houses. But situated as it is in the centre of the conflict between the Arabs and Israelis the city has been bombed continually and today its streets are almost deserted.
