Background: In Syria, a high level delegation from the Soviet Union has completed talks which culminated on Wednesday (15 March) with the signing of an agreement for technical and economic co-operation between the two countries.
SYNOPSIS: The Soviet Union's delegation was led by Mr Semyon Skachkov, Chairman of the State Committee for Foreign Economic Relations. Signing for Syria was Dr. Georges Hauraniya, Minister of Planning??? The new agreement marks a further improvement in the relations between the Soviet Union and Syria, and follows the recent visit to Moscow of Syria's President Assad. According to Reuters news agency Syria's intervention in Lebanon eighteen months ago did not meet with the approval of the Soviet Union. But President Assad was able to assure his hosts that the intervention had the backing of the rest of the Arab rations.
The new agreement will provide valuable assistance for Syria now beginning her fourth five-year development programme; which includes irrigation projects linked to the Russian-built Euphrates Dam.
