Background: At least twelve people are believed to have died following Tuesday's department store fire in Singapore.
The fire is believed to have started in the basement of the four-story building at about ten o'clock in the morning, just as the morning business was getting into full swing.
The department store, one of the largest and most exclusive in Singapore, was completely gutted in the blaze.
Six of the dead were said to be trapped in a lift which stuck just above the ground floor when the department store's electrical system ceased to function.
Firemen were on the scene within minutes of the alarm, but the building continued to blaze fiercely until only smouldering ruins remained. Officials said firemen were unable to enter the wreckage until five hours after the flames had been extinguished because the heat from the runs was so intense.
