Background: New Yorkers go to the polls today (Tuesday, November 6) to elect a successor to Mayor John Lindsay. Democratic candidate Abraham Beame appears to be set for a landslide victory. And if he wins, Beame will become the city's first Jewish Mayor, and, at the age of 67, the oldest first-time Mayor of New York. At present Beame is the city's Chief Financial Officer. A major issue in the campaign has been crime in the streets, but the new mayor, whoever be may be, will be immediately be faced with a strike by New York's 10,900 firemen that is due to begin on Tuesday - the first strike by the fire department in its 108-year history.
