Background: General Odysseus Anghelis, who was sworn in as Vice-President of Greece on Sunday (19 August), handed over as chief of the Greek armed forces to General Demetrius Zagorianakos in a ceremony in Athens the previous day (Saturday, 18 August). The shuffle was part of the government re-organisation -- in which former Prime Minister and Regent George Papadopoulos was sworn in as President on Sunday -- which followed a referendum on July 29 which sealed the abolition of the Greek monarchy and approved constitutional changes for the establishment of a republic.

General Anghelis, who has spent forty years in the army, was the only other candidate in the referendum with Colonel Papadopoulos. Lt.-General Zagorianakos, who was army chief, was made up to full general for his promotion.
