Background: The world's oldest man, Shigechiyo Izumi, was up early on June 28 to take his morning walk. Born in 1865, Mr. Izumi was celebrating his 117th birthday with family members and friends at his home on the island of Tokunoshima, 470 kilometres (about 300 miles) south of Japan's southern island of Kyushu. Mr. Izumi says the secret of his longevity has been an orderly life. After his 6.30 am walk, Mr. Izumi has hard boiled rice gruel and miso (bean curd soup) containing his favourite seaweed. Daily he drinks two glasses of a local blend of Shochu -- a spirit made from sugar cane, and for relaxation likes to watch professional wrestling on television. The family doctor says Mr. Izumi's blood pressure is normal, and he has no health problems.
