Background: In Prague on Monday (2 October) 31 riders from eleven countries competed for one Czechoslovakia's top motor cycling awards--the "Golden Helmet".
For the first time there were no competitors from Britain, but riders from Hungary Rumania did take part.
Because of the number of competitors, the finalists were decided only after thirty preliminary heats, quarter and semi-finals.
For the third successive year, a Dane, Ole Olsen, crossed the finishing line first--followed by a New Zealander, Ivan Mauger and Georgi Ivanov of the Soviet Union.
