Background: Discussions in the peace talks between President Tshombe of Katanga and United Nations officials at Ndola. Northern Rhodesia, were adjourned midway through Sept 20 for a ceremony in tribute to Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, the late U.N. Secretary-General, whose body was lying in state in the nearby modern non-conformist church.
Delegates to the talks, including the principals, joined Sir Evelyn Hone, Governor of Northern Rhodesia; Lord Alport, British High Commissioner in the Rhodesian Federation; and other personalities at the church ceremony. There was no service, only the placing of wreaths round the silver mounted coffin on its black catafalque. A Rhodesian military guard of honour was changed every five minutes.
Mr. Hammarskjoeld's body will be flown home to Sweden, where it will be given a state funeral Sept 29 at Uppsala Cathedral.
