Background: Tight security was in force as Socialist party leaders from 20 countries attended a one-day meeting of the Socialist International in West Berlin on Saturday (22 February).

On arrival at the conference building, delegates were greeted by a small and peaceful demonstration against the military government in Chile.

Among the prominent leaders attending the meeting were the former West German Chancellor, Willy Brandt, the Israeli Foreign Minister, Yigal Allon, the former Israeli Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, and the leader of the French Socialist Party, Francois Mitterrand. Prominent members of many European Socialist parties also attended, but Dr. Mario Soares -- leader of the Portuguese Socialist Party -- was unable to take part.

The main topic of discussion at the conference was the possible European contribution toward a peaceful settlement in the Middle East. Delegates also considered an Austrian proposal to invite Western and Arab Socialist party experts to Vienna to discuss such problems as oil prices and the profits realised by multi-national oil companies.

The conference also discussed the implications of the European Security Conference, now in its second stage, and the problems of Cyprus.

While the conference was in session, nearly a thousand Maoist demonstrators protested elsewhere in West Berlin against what they described as the provocative presence of the Israeli leaders.
