Background: The President of Bangladesh, Major-General Ziaur Rahman, has pledged his country's support for Egypt and its solidarity with the Arab world in the conflict with Israel. Presidential Zia arrived in Egypt on Friday (23 September) for a three-day visit.
SYNOPSIS: President Zia arrived at Cairo airport to be greeted by President Anwar Sadat. Before he left Dacca, President Zia stressed his country's solidarity with the Arab world..and it's a point he again emphasised in Cairo. In a speech at a banquet after the ceremonies at the airport, General Zia said Bangladesh believed a lasting peace in the Middle East could only come about by Israel's withdrawing from all occupied Arab territories.
Bangladesh support has been welcomed by the Egyptians, and President Sadat later stressed what he termed Egypt's "Basic conditions" which were indispensable for the creation of a "just and durable" peace.
During his three-day visit to Egypt, General Zia was due to tour Cairo and visit the Suez Canal town of Ismailia, where he was to visit the Second Army's headquarters in the area.
Official talks between the two leaders, which started on Saturday, ranged over the Middle East situation...and bilateral relations, including Bangladesh's need for experience and technology in cotton cultivation.
