Background: Japanese artist Nandaimon Higashioji has succeeded in turning discarded tin and other metal cans into works of art. Higashioji calls himself a street artist, because he collects his raw material from the streets. Higashioji first cuts open and then straightens out each can into a sheet of metal. Then he fastens them together in colourful combinations. His recent Tokyo exhibition featured large-scale sculptures, such as his robot-like "Sitting Person". Some art critics have been amused by his Picasso-like objects d'art. Also on show were sculptures based on a mosaic theme. Higashioji has appealed not only to esoteric tastes, but has been commercially successful as well. His works are popular in restaurants and snack bars where the customers seem to appreciate the irony of art produced from disposable cans. With his artistry and sense of humour, Higashioji has been finding popularity outside Japan as well. His inspiration seems as unending as his source of raw material.
