Background: Left-wing students went on the rampage in Tokyo on saturday (May 13) burning cars and throwing firebombs in defiance of a new law banning the use and manufacture of petrol bombs.

The police arrested 125 students. who they said hurled more than 100 petrol bombs in a main street -- burning a police box and three private cars. Nearly 30 policemen were injured in the battle.

The new law imposts prison terms of up to seven years on anyone endangering life and property by using petrol bombs.

The demonstrators were among 800 students who held a rally at a university nearby to protest against the terms under which the island of Okinawa has been handed back to Japan after 27 years of occupation by the United States.

The main controversy is about the continued military presence of the United States on the island. About 2,000 U.S. forces are still on the island, used by the U.S. Air Force as a base for some of its B-52 strategic bomber force.

SYNOPSIS: In Tokyo, left-wing students went on the rampage on Saturday...smashing cars and anything else they could lay their hands on. They were protesting against a new law banning the use of petrol bombs. And although that law carries a sentence of up to seven years in prison, many students used the bombs to register their disapproval. The police moved in quickly.

The riot was an offshoot of a bigger demonstration against the continued military presence of the United States in Okinawa. Altogether, police said, the students threw more than one hundred petrol bombs....burning a police box and three private cars.

As the rioting continued, the students went wild...performing a victory celebration dance round the burning wreckage. But their apparent joy was shortlived, and the police....finally...lost their patience. In the ensuing battle, twenty-eight policemen user injured and more than one hundred demonstrators arrested....And having registered their complaint against the new anti-petrol bomb law, some of them must now face charges under it...and the penalty imposed by it.
