Background: Sft Stanislaus /1030-1079/, bishop of Cracow, sentenced to death for opposing the king, canonized in 1254. As the legend says he was assassinated while saying the mass at the church at Skalka, a few hundred metres from Wawel /his life is parallel to the life of ST Thomas Beckett/. It is reported that Stanislaus had headed a plot against the king and his death caused the rebel of the magnates and the king had to fly the country. The body of St Stanislaus is kept in a silver coffin at the Wawel cathedral. St Stanislaus is the patron of Krakow archidiocese. The follower of St Stanislaus - former bishop of Krakow, the present pope John Paul II called his visit to Poland in 1979 "his pilgrimage to St Stanislaus tomb". This year has been devoted to the celebrations of the 900th anniversary of St Stanislaus death.

The procession from the Wawel cathedral to ST Stanislaus church at Skalka /the site where he was assassinated, on the anniversary of his canonization which falls on Sunday closest to the day of May 8th, that is Stanislaus nameday/ is one of Polish oldest religious traditions. During the procession the reliquary containing the head of St Stanislaus is carried. This year participated in the procession: archbishop Jozef Glemp, cardinal Franciszek Macharski - archbishop of Krakow, monastic orders, bishops from all Poland, professors of the Paul Teological Faculty in Krakow, pilgrims in traditional regional costumes.

The present baroque church at Skalka dating back to the 17th century is the third church built on that place. At the church yard there is a statue of St Stanislaus dating back to the 18th century, surrounded by a pond - its waters are said to have healing properties.

    The celebration lasted four hours.
