Background: Civil engineers in Sweden have accomplished yet another outstanding feat in subterranean building. An Atomic bomb shelter is now in the process of being completed and it houses for peacetime as wella war-time purposes, the largest recreation centre in the world.
The Swedes are world known for their ability to build below the surface, as the Americans are for building above. During the second World War much of the Swedish Airforce was housed in massive underground hangars and storage depots, hewn out of mountains. This latest achievement is capable of containing 6,000 people, and for their recreation there will be a theatre, a cinema a bar, various rooms and the like for hobbies and recreations of many kinds.
When King Gustav comes to open the shelter in May this year, the buildings will be ready for school children, studying at the school, above, to use as a training hall. Although these people using the amenities of this cavern will be 100 feet (30 metres) below the surface of the earth, conditions inside will be comfortable.
The cost of this shelter, though totalling 10 million Kroner, is well spent, for should never come the population of Veterans will be well provided with recreation facilities.
The principle behind using net building for there purpose is to accustom the population with the lay-out and various parts of it, in the even of war clouds gathering and radio-active dusts descending on Sweden.
