    Background: BEIRUT, LEBANON

In the wake of the September 16 massacre in Beirut, the Lebanese cabinet has asked for the return of Italian, French and United States forces which left two days earlier after supervising the withdrawal of Palestinian guerrillas from the city. The United Nations Security Council has sent an extra 40 UN observers to join the ten already in Beirut. Following the massacre of up to 1,000 Palestinian refugees, Lebanese military forces have now taken up positions at several points in mainly Moslem West Beirut. AT the same time hospitals continue to treat the sick and injured, and as this nurse explained -- more staff and medical supplies are urgently needed. On September 19, the Israeli military presence was visible around the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, site of the massacre, and at the city's stadium, where Palestinian men were being rounded up for identity check-ups. Israel has firmly denied responsibility for the killings, which took place in the vicinity of their troop positions.
