Background: Up to 75 per cent of Malawi's electorate is expected to have voted by the close of polls in the tiny southern African country's second general election since independence in 1964. The election, held on June 28 and 29, will probably not change Malawi's political direction, as the country is a one-party state. All prospective members of Parliament belong to the Malawi Congress Party of President Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda. The electorate is estimated by the official Malawi news agency to be two million. other sources have put the total number of eligible voters at between 2.5 and three million. No statistics have yet been made available by electoral officials and census figures are hard to find. The election results will be published on July 3. President Dr Banda, now in his eighties, has ruled Malawi since independence in 1964 and has pursued a pragmatic, pro-western foreign policy. Recent events in Malawi have been seen as signals of a behind-the-scenes struggle for a successor to Dr Banda.
