Background: Ethiopia's Education Minister, who officially opened a three-day educational conference at Addis Ababa on Wednesday, (12 September) said adult and women's education were both vital for the social and economic development of Africa.

Seventy experts from nineteen countries attended the fourth bi-annual conference of the African Adult Education Association, held at African Hall in the Ethiopian capital. The main theme was "Adult Education and the Development of Skilled Manpower" with an auxiliary theme, "The Education of Women in the 1970s."
The Ethiopian Minister, Ato Seifu Mahteme Selassie, said the traditional education system in many developing countries was geared towards academic training and did not provide employable skills for students.

He said Ethiopia, in an effort to overcome this situation, had introduced an educational review, which placed strong emphasis on vocational and technically-orientated education. The programme was intended to enable school-leavers and drop-outs to find employment, and to help meet Ethiopia's need for skilled manpower.

The adult education conference was attended by representatives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
