Background: ANZAC DAY WAS COMMEMORATED IN LONDON TODAY (SUNDAY). ABOUT 2,000 COMMONWEALTH EX-SERVICEMEN MARCHED TO A WREATH-LAYING CEREMONY AT THE CENOTAPH WAR MEMORIAL. IT WAS 50 YEARS AGO TO THE DAY THAT THE ANZACS (AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND ARMY CORPS) LANDED AT GALLIPOLI, IN TURKEY, IN AN ABORTIVE ATTEMPT TO KNOCK THE TURKS OUT OF WORLD WAR ONE.

VETERANS FROM AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND CAME TO BRITAIN FOR THE CEREMONY AND TO BE REUNITED WITH THEIR OLD COMRADES. THEY GATHERED IN HORSE GUARDS PARADE, LONDON'S MOST FAMOUS MILITARY PARADE GROUND, TO BEGIN THE MARCH DOWN WHITEHALL TO THE CENOTAPH, THE MEMORIAL TO THE DEAD OF WORLD WARS ONE AND TWO. MOST OF THEM WORE THEIR CAMPAIGN MEDALS.

AT THE CENOTAPH, THE WREATH-LAYING CEREMONY BEGAN AS BIG BEN - THE CLOCK ATOP THE NEARBY HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT - STRUCK 12 NOON. WREATHS WERE LAID ON BEHALF OF THE AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENTS BY THEIR HIGH COMMISSIONERS TO BRITAIN, MR. ALEXANDER DOWNER (AUSTRALIA) AND SIR THOMAS MACDONALD (NZ).

OTHER WREATHS WERE PLACED ON THE MEMORIAL BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FRENCH ARMED FORCES AND THE INDIAN ARMY, BOTH OF WHICH TOOK PART IN THE GALLIPOLI CAMPAIGN, THE PAKISTANI ARMY, BRITISH AND OTHER COMMONWEALTH SERVICES, AND RETURNED SERVICEMEN'S ORGANISATIONS. LADY FREYBERG, WIDOW OF THE NEW ZEALAND-BORN V.C.-HOLDER, LAID ONE ON BEHALF OF THE VICTORIA LEAGUE.

THEN THE LAST POST WAS SOUNDED - A SALUTE TO THE MEMORY OF THE THOUSANDS WHO DIED IN THE ATTEMPT TO FORCE THE NARROW STRAITS OF THE DARDANELLESS BETWEEN THE ASIAN AND EUROPEAN SHORES OF TURKEY.

(IN TURKEY ITSELF, ANZAC AND TURKISH VETERANS EMBRACED EACH OTHER ON THE BEACH WHERE 50 YEARS AGO THEY FOUGHT OUT A LIFE AND DEATH BATTLE).
