Background: On arrival at Vienna Airport, Mar 26, at the start of a three-day visit, United States Secretary of Defence Thomas S.Gates was greeted by Austrian Defence Minister Graf. The American Defence Secretary flew from Berlin in a special plane provided by the United States Air Force. He was accompanied by his wife and daughter, and by a party of senior U.S. officers
While in Austria, Gates will tour some of the country's Army bases and military installations. He will see Austrian armoured troops take part in an exercise at Bruck, Mar 28.

The American Minister is returning a visit to the United States by his Austrian counterpart Graf last November. Having earlier visited West Germany, Gates will fly from Vienna to Paris for the NATO Defence Ministers' conference, Mar 31.
