Background: A 14-MAN JAPANESE ECONOMIC MISSION LED BY DR. KAZUE KITAWAGA, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES LTD, ARRIVES AT CHILEKA AIRPORT, BLANTYRE ON THE MORNING OF MARCH 10 FOR A ONE DAY VISIT TO MALAWI.

SPEAKING THROUGH AN INTERPRETER, DR. KITAWAGA EXPLAINED THAT THE PURPOSE OF THE VISIT WAS TO STUDY WAYS AND MEANS OF ECONOMIC AND TECHNICAL CO-OPERATION BETWEEN JAPAN AND MALAWI. THE MISSION WOULD EXAMINE MALAWI'S DEVELOPMENT PLAN AND SEE WHAT COULD BE DONE TO CONTRIBUTE TO SOME OF ITS PROJECTS.

MR. KITAWAGA EMPHASIZED THAT THE MISSION WAS NEITHER COMMERCIAL NOR GOVERNMENTAL. IT HAD NO SPECIFIC PROJECTS I MIND FOR THIS DEVELOPMENT CO-OPERATION. NEITHER DID IT HAVE ANY SPECIFIC QUESTION TO DISCUSS WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MALAWI GOVERNMENT.

THE OFFICIAL HANDOUT DETAILED PREVIOUS VISITS BY THE MISSION - TO WESTERN EUROPE IN JUNE 1964, TO SOUTH EAST ASIA IN JANUARY 1965, AND IN AUGUST OF THE SAME YEAR TO BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA. THE LATEST MALAWI VISIT COMES AS PART OF AN ECONOMIC MISSION TO THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, KENYA, UGANDA, TANZANIA, ZAMBIA, NIGERIA, ETHIOPIA, AND, OF COURSE, MALAWI.

AFTER THE BRIEF VISIT, WHICH INCLUDED A COURTESY CALL ON D. KAMUZU BANDA, THE MISSION LEFT FOR LUSAKA.
