Background: Nearly 100,000 marchers, mainly young people, filed through St. Peter's Square on Sunday (9 May) in the biggest of some 650 marches held throughout the world at the weekend. They were co-ordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the U.N. to point up the problem of hunger in many countries, and to raise funds for the Freedom From Hunger campaign. The marchers in St. Peter's Square received a Papal blessing.

SYNOPSIS: The largest of 650 weekend marches, in countries around the world, wound through Rome and the Vatican City on Sunday. The marchers, mainly young people, were raising funds for the Freedom From Hunger campaign. All the marches were co-ordinated by the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organisation.

This march started outside the FAO Headquarters in Rome. Contingents from many different countries marched alongside young folk from all parts of Italy. Like elsewhere each participant was financially sponsored for every mile covered, and it was hoped that a total approaching four million pounds would be realised after an estimated 35 million miles.

It took nearly an hour and a half for all these marchers to pass through St. Peter's Square. Mary were chanting slogans and waving placards and banners calling for compassionate giving to alleviate hunger. The idea for the marches was originally suggested by the Italian voluntary organisation "Mani Tese", and quickly caught on in other countries.

At midday Pope Paul appeared at a window to address the young people and give them his blessing. He said he admired their positive concern...a sign of growing awareness around the world.
