TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 3): LAGU: "A country like this is bound to have some enemies. It didn't amount to anything much, I mean we are in control of our country and our people are happy -- of it is for them -- particularly in the south here, for the peace they have achieved. The people who have been toying with trouble for over 17 years -- they know the peace that they've attained now will be valued above everything and if anyone wants to destroy that peace they will surely struggle against that person. And of course I must tell you that apart from our enemies who are outside this country there is an element among our own population. But particularly of the regimes prior to the May revolution. These people are outside the Sudan -- they call themselves the National Front and they are working hard against us. They are the same people who when they were in power they did not have the interest to solve the southern problem at all. These are only jealous people and whatever attempts they will try to do against us they will never succeed. They are just, as one of our chiefs put it to me sometimes, that you don't worry about these men -- they symbolise a dirty man -- a dirty man that drags, whose body full of dirt and when he sees you, smartly dressed and you are going by, although he knows that he cannot defeat you, he will pick up a quarrel with you to fight you."

Background: INTRODUCTION The commander of Sudan's southern army has been speaking about the armed attempt last month to take over the airport at Juba, the south's capital. Major-General Joseph Lagu called a news conference last Monday (7 March) to accuse outside forces of engineering the attack on February the second, and of trying to cause unrest in the southern Sudan, which ended 1 17-year-long civil war with the north five years ago.

SYNOPSIS: Eight soldiers and two foreign workers were killed when Sudanese Air Force personnel tried to take over the airport. The attack was put down by loyal army forces. Major Lagu compared the organisers of the attack to "a dirty man".
