Background: Tanzania celebrated the ninth anniversary of the formation of The United Republic of Tanzania on Thursday (26 April). The week-long celebrations of the anniversary climaxed with a presidential parade by armed forces at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam. The hour-long parade included contingents from the Tanzania people's Defence Forces, Police, Prisons and Militia personnel and the People's Militia. President Mwelimu Julius Nyerere took the salute. It was his first official participation in this year's celebrations. First Vies President, Mr. Jumbe and the Prime Minister, Mr. Kawawa, also attended the stadium celebrations.
The festivities mark the day of the signing of articles establishing union between Tanganyika end the offshore island of Zanzibar. The articles ware signed by president Nyerere and the late Sheikh ???, who was ??? in April, 1973.
Among ??? activities to ??? Salaam were sports events and dances at most community centres. Similar celebrations took place in towns and rural areas throughout the country.

President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere took part in this year's official celebrations for the first time when he reviewed a military parade around the stadium. The military review was the climax of a week of celebrations throughout Tanzania. The hour-long parade included representatives of all armed forces in the country.
Nine years ago, articles were signed agreeing to the union of Tanganyika and the island of Zanzibar. President Nyerere was one signatory...the other was the lats Sheikh Karume, who was ??? in April last year. The signing anniversary has become known as union day and is the country's most important annual celebration.
Representatives of the Tanzania People's Defence Forces: Police, Prisons and National Service unite, marched past with members of the People's Militia.
The ??? and ??? festival in the capital was the biggest celebration. But other events marking Union Day were held in urban and rural centres throughout Tanzania.
