Background: In the early hours of Monday (October 12) six bombs exploded in New York State. In New York City, the Hilton Hotel was the target of unknown terrorists, while in the city of Rochester five other explosive devices caused damage to several buildings including the home of a Labour Leader.

The five Rochester bombs detonated at ten-minute intervals, damaging two Government building, two black church and the home of Labour Leader, Dick Clark.

Police said that either several persons or a complex timing device were involved. They also said that dynamite involved may have been part of an 89-stick haul of stolen explosives taken from a construction site truck on the previous Friday.

Hardest hit by the explosions was the Monroe County office building where damage was estimated at around 100,000 dollars. Virtually every window on one side of the five storey structure was smashed. Window of other nearby buildings were also smashed by the blast.

The two churches, both which serve predominantly black congregations, suffered broken windows and minor structural damage. The other Government property bombed was the Federal Building where damage was set at about 10,000 dollars.

Police stated that they had no information indicating who was responsible for the bomb attacks or their purpose.

In New York on the same morning a bomb exploded in a small flower garden outside a large plate-glass lobby window at the Hilton Hotel. Damage was slight and, as in Rochester, their were no casualties. The bomb detonated when the lobby was empty.

Police say that five men, all wearing Afro haircuts, ran from the scene as the bomb went off.

The blast was the latest in a series of explosions that have taken place in New York City recently.
