Speaking on the Middle East situation at the press conference, Herr Scheel said:
"The Federal Government together with its friends in Europe is greatly interested in these questions. We Germans alone, are of course, not in a position to play a decisive role in this respect or to offer a magic formula for a solution, but naturally we are prepared like many other governments to joint in the efforts to find an honourable peace settlement that will be acceptable to all, that is of course if our help is wanted and can be useful. We have put forward our respective views quite frankly in an atmosphere of mutual confidence, but you will understand that I cannot go into the details owing to the confidential nature of our talks. All the same I and my partners in the discussions agree that it is high time that serious efforts were made to resolve the conflict."

Background: On the final day of his visit to Egypt West German Foreign Minister Herr Walter Scheel announced that Chancellor Willy Brandt has accepted an invitation to visit Egypt during next year.
At the end of his three-day visit Herr Scheel met with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. The meeting, at the Presidential palace, lasted ninety-minutes, ??? of the thirty minutes that the most important aspect of Herr Scheel's visit was not the discussion of the Middle East conflict, but the fact that the visit itself had shown their mutual interest in each other.
Speaking at a press conference at the end of his visit, Herr Scheel said there were no special relations between West Germany and Israel, but then admitted that there were "good relations with a special character". He did not expend on the meaning of this "special character".
Later in the day, the Foreign Minister left for a two-day visit to Jordan, and will end his Middle East tour with a visit to Lebanon.
