Background: Former Wimbledon champions, American Bille Joan King and Australian Evonne Cawloy (nee Goolagong), are among the semi-finalists in the Wimbledon tennis championships. Along with womens' singles titles-holder Chris Evert and Margaret Court, they won their quarter final matches at Wimbledon on Monday (30 June).

On Wednesday (2 July) Miss Evert and Mrs. King will meet in an all-american semi-final while Mrs. Cawley and Mrs. Court will clash in an all-australian match.

Mrs. Cawley, who married two weeks ago, defeated Britain's Virginia Wade the most exciting women's match of the tournament. Both players were in top form throughout and each point was hard-earned as they hit more winners from both wings. Mrs. Cawley made more errors but she also hit more winners and Miss Wade was forced to the limits of her ability to stay in a match she never quite looked capable of winning.

The contest finally hinged on a crucial service break in the 15th name of the final set when Mrs. Cawley hit a beautiful forehand pass down the line. The final result was 5-7, 6-7, 9-7.

Mrs. King's efficient 6-3, 6-3, win over the seventh seeded Olga Morozova avenged her defeat by the soviet player in last year's quarter-finals here. Mrs. King, five times champion at Wimbledon, and this year's third seed, was supremely confident as she served and volleyed her way to a simple victory over Miss Morozova in exactly an hour.

Tennis fans watching the quarter-finals of the women's singles paid up to ten times the official price for tickets. seats worth tree pounds sterling ($7 US) were being sold for $30 pounds sterling ($70 US) on a black market at Wimbledon's main entrance.
