Background: Exercise Green Cobra, an alert problem for the pilots and their various squadrons of the 3rd. Brigade, Italian Air Force, took place recently in North East Italy.
The U.S. Sixth Fleet and other NATO member countries sent some of their aircraft to act as aggressors. They were picked up by radar and the 3rd. Brigade Italian Air force was alerted and ordered to scramble to intercept.
There was an impressive climax the following day as carrier planes from the USS carriers ESSEX and SARATOGA gave an air power demonstration over the Italian range of the Dolomite Alps. Both Jet and Turbo-prop planes were used.
The entire exercise was under the command of Lt. General Sergio Lalatta, Italian Air Force, 5 Tactical Air Force, Vicenza, Italy.
