Background: The death of former French President Charles de Gaulle and the mourning period which followed resulted in a reduction in people attending the November 11 Remembrance ceremonies in the Ivory Coast last Wednesday.

The country's leader Mr. Houphouet-Boigny, was one of the dignitaries who couldn't be present for the ceremonies. He went to Paris for the burial service for General de Gaulle.

Representing the government in the Abidjan ceremonies was the Minister of the Armed Forces, Mr. Kouadjo. Also attending was the French Ambassador, Mr. Leygues.

Wreaths were laid at the War Memorial in memory of those soldiers from the Ivory Coast who gave their lives during the two World Wars.

During a simple, but moving ceremony, Government and Foreign dignitaries stood alongside members of the Ivory Coast's Armed Forces now carrying on the glorious traditions formed during the World Wars.
