Background: INTRODUCTION: Major new armed clashes have been reported on the volatile border between Vietnam and China. China said more than 150 Vietnamese troops were killed when they attacked a Chinese border commune in Guangxi province on Sunday (17 May). Vietnam also reported a clash in the same area, but blamed China for starting it. The latest round of fighting began two weeks earlier with sporadic clashes leading to the most intense battles since the border war two years ago.
SYNOPSIS: China has long been concerned about its relations across its southern it relations across its southern border. In 1979, a full scale war broke out following the Vietnamese-backed overthrow of a pro-Chinese government in Kampuchea. Since then an uneasy truce has been punctuated by fighting like that during the past two weeks. It is still unclear how the fighting started, as neither side has permitted independent observers near the war zone. Both China and Vietnam continue the troop build-up on their respective sides of this tense frontier.
