The Polisario General Secretary, Mr. Mohammed Abdelaziz later issued a warning to foreigners working in the disputed areas at a news conference held at a desert settlement near the frontier with Algeria, which supports the Polisario. Mr. Abdelaziz said any foreigners working in Morocco, Mauritania or the Western Sahara -- whether they gave moral or physical support to those countries -- could only be considered as mercenaries.

Mr. Abdelaziz said people who supported the interests and economic potential of countries who were fighting against the Polisario could be risking death. He said, however, that the Polisario was committed to respecting all conventions and declarations, in principle or otherwise, which would facilitate collaboration and co-operation between all countries whose interests had been touched on recently in Mauritania.

The remarks by Mr. Abdelaziz were seen as a reference to the raid carried out by Polisario guerrillas on the Mauritanian mining centre of Zouerate, during which 10 people -- six of them French nationals -- were abducted. A French doctor and his wife were shot??? dead during the raid. The guerrillas started raiding into Mauritania and Morocco last summer. Their leaders have warned tourists against visiting these countries. The release of the hostages who are said to be fit and well, will depend on political concessions by Mauritania, which is heavily dependant on the French government.
