Background: President Philibert Tsiranana, the only candidate in the January 30th. Madagascar Presidential Elections, opened his campaign on Monday (10 January) at a meeting of his Social Democrat Party in a large gymnasium at Mahamasina.

The election of president Tsiranana, who has held office since 1958, is virtually assured, and his party will be concerned in the campaign to see that the President gets maximum support at the polls for his third seven-year term.
