    RIDGWAY: WELL, I THINK THE EFFECT OF THE ROWING WAS THAT I WAS OVERWHELMED WITH JUST HOW SHORT ONE'S LIFE IS AND IN THAT SHORT PERIOD OF TIME WE SHOULD MAKE THE BEST USE OF WHAT EVER TALENTS WE HAVE. I SEEM WELL SUITED FOR THIS KIND OF THING AND THAT'S HOW I LIKE TO OCCUPY MY TIME.

    HE WAS GIVEN A TREMENDOUS SEND-OFF AS HIS YACHT, ENGLISH ROSE IV SAILED THROUGH THE WATERS OF GALWAY BAY ACCOMPANIED BY A SMALL FLOTILLA OF CRAFT WITH HOOTERS AND WHISTLES BLOWING.

    RIDGWAY, WHO WITH SERGEANT CHAY BLYTH LANDED AT GALWAY BAY IN SEPTEMBER 1966 AFTER ROWING THE ATLANTIC, IS 29. IN 1966 THE LIFEBOAT MABLE MARION THOMPSON ESCORTED RIDGWAY AND BLYTH INTO GALWAY BAY. AND YESTERDAY THE LIFEBOAT WAS ON HAND TO ESCORT ENGLISH ROSE IV OUT OF THE BAY. HIS BOAT IS 30FT LONG SLOOP RIDGWAY WILL COMPETE FOR A PRIZE OF GBP5,000 FOR THE MAN WHO MAKES THE FASTEST JOURNEY ROUND THE WORLD. IT'S BEING OFFERED BY A BRITISH NEWSPAPER. SIX OTHER MEN HAVE ANNOUNCED THEIR INTENTION OF COMPETING.

    INISHMORE, IN EIRE'S GALWAY BAY. A SMALL, ISOLATED COMMUNITY BUT THE SPOT CHOSEN BY CAPTAIN JOHN RIDGWAY, A BRITISH PARATROOPER, TO START HIS SINGLE-HANDED, NON-STOP, ROUND-THE-WORLD TRIP BY YACHT. HE LEAVES BEHIND A WIFE AND A BABY DAUGHTER.

    SOF BEGINS AT 18 SECS 3.4m "WHAT HAS PROMPTED YOU...."
    SOF ENDS AT 1.20 SECS 50FT 15.2 "....THANK YOU VERY MUCH."
    CAPTAIN RIDGWAY IS NO STRANGER TO INISHMORE. IT WAS HERE THAT HE AND SERGENT CHAY BLYTH ENDED THEIR ROW ACROSS THE ATLANTIC IN 1966 - A 3,000 MILE, 92-DAY HAUL.

    RIDGWAY'S TRIP THIS TIME IS IN A 30FT FIBRE GLASS SLOOP, ENGLISH ROSE IV. HE'S THE FIRST OF THE CONTESTANTS TO SET SAIL IN ROUND-THE-WORLD RACE, SPONSORED BY A BRITISH NEWSPAPER. FIRST PRIZE IS GBP5,000 FOR THE FASTEST JOURNEY.

    ENGLISH ROSE WAS TOWED OUT OF THE HARBOUR. AMONG THE ESCORTING VESSELS WAS THE LIFEBOAT MABLE MARION THOMPSON, WHICH WAS ON HAND WHEN HE ENDED HIS ATLANTIC ROW IN 1966. HIS VIEW OF THIS VOYAGE: "IT'S A LONG TRIP."
