Background: FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 16 YEARS A PRESIDENT OF INDIA HAS REVIEWED THE INDIAN FLEET. THE LAST REVIEW WAS IN 1953 WHEN THE THEN PRESIDENT, DR. PRASAD REVIEWED 20 SHIPS. THIS WEEK PRESIDENT GIRI REVIEWED A TOTAL OF 57 SHIPS IN BOMBAY HARBOUR.

THE SHIPS IN THE REVIEW THIS YEAR INCLUDED FOUR MERCHANT SHIPS, A TRAINING SHIP AND FIVE CRAFT FROM THE NAVAL DOCKYARD.

THE REVIEW HAS A TRADITIONAL SIGNIFICANCE. IN EARLIER TIMES A MONARCH OR HEAD OF STATE REVIEWED THE FLEET AS A GESTURE OF GOODWILL, TO ENCOURAGE THE FLEET, AND TO ASSURE HIMSELF THAT ALL WAS WELL WITH THE FLEET.

AS PRESIDENT GIRI'S YACHT APPROACHED EACH SHIP IN THE REVIEW, THE SHIP'S COMPANY ON DECK CAME TO ATTENTION, FACED THE YACHT, AND GAVE THREE CHEERS. AFTER THE LAST SHIP WAS REVIEWED A FLY-PAST COMMENCED OF MORE THAN 40 AIRCRAFT INCLUDING HELICOPTERS.
